When delta CRLs are used, the client keeps the main CRL in its cache and downloads new delta CRLs. The lists are combined when the certificate verifier seeks to validate presented certificates. Figure 2-16 shows this process. When a new main CRL is issued, all the revoked certificates published in delta CRLs will be in the new main CRL. The old delta CRLs are no longer needed and are deleted. The client application must understand delta CRLs to use them. (All applications that use Crypto-API in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 can use delta CRLS.) However, if a client cannot use delta CRLs, the client can still use the main CRL in the nor mal way. The client just will not be able to see newly revoked certificates until the old CRL expires and a new CRL is downloaded. At time t4 the old main CRL validity period ends. Both client A and B download the new main CRL. During the time between time t2 and t4, client B has no knowledge of the revoked Jeff certifi cate. If the certificate were presented, it might be validated. However, client A, which downloaded the delta CRL, would not validate the certificate.
